The underwater scenery in the area is one of the 10 most beautiful underwater landscapes in the world. There are gigantic boulders of granite forming several caves and, in some of these, there are numerous red corals (corallium rubrum).
A typical feature of this area is that of the sea walls, rich with red gorgonian and rock formations. A slight, continuous current allows visibility from 30 to 50 m.
The crystal clear waters have made this coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea famous and unique, with its various shades of colour from blue and sky-blue to emerald green. At depths between 15 and 40 m, there is a great variety of species of Mediterranean wildlife here, such as Moray Eels, Conger Eels, Lobsters, Cicadas, Octopus, Nudibranches (commonly called sea slugs) and Groupers. A captivating and unforgettable experience is that of diving into the area of the Black Coral (Gherardia Savaglia). The largest of this species found, so far, in the Mediterranean Sea, lies at a depth of 33 m, where it protrudes from a wall, forming two large fans
Shallows of the Grouper
An extraordinary and unique event is a diving experience at the “Secca delle Cernie” (meaning “Shallows of the Grouper”).
The Grouper is a tame fish and will follow you for the duration of the dive, though there are also frequent encounters with red snappers and greater amberjacks, which magically appear in the blue waters. At 35 metres below the surface, embedded in a block of underwater granite, is a huge specimen of Gerarda Savaglia, the famous black coral.
This incredible sight is captivating and unforgettable. As soon as you go down into the water, you find yourself surrounded by clouds of white sea bream, saddled sea bream and black sea bream, accompanying you to depths of 20 metres below the surface, where the real “masters of the house” await you: dozens of grouper, weighing up to 35 kg, will come to meet you, letting you pet and pamper them and eating directly out of your hands.
